From 13–14 March 2025, MVIWAMORO, in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) through the Forest and Farm Facility (FFF) project, conducted a two-day training on tree nursery production in Msimba Village. The training aimed to strengthen the capacity of Farmer Forest Producer Organizations (FFPOs) to establish and manage tree nurseries as part of efforts to promote climate change adaptation, land restoration, and environmental conservation. A total of 30 farmers (17 women and 13 men) from the hamlets of Ng’apa, Miyomboni, and Mji Mpya participated in the training. Participants were equipped with practical skills in tree nursery establishment and management, including site selection, soil preparation, seed selection, seed sowing techniques, watering, pest control, and seedling care. Farmers also learned the importance of selecting native and drought-resistant tree species to enhance ecosystem restoration and climate resilience. As a result of the training, farmers formed two community-based tree nursery production groups that will lead seedling production in the village. These nurseries will support reforestation, agroforestry practices, and land rehabilitation efforts, while also creating income opportunities through the sale of seedlings.
The initiative also encouraged farmers to integrate agroforestry practices into their farming systems by planting trees alongside crops to improve soil fertility, reduce erosion, and enhance biodiversity. Through this training, MVIWAMORO continues to empower local communities to take an active role in restoring degraded landscapes and building sustainable livelihoods through forest-based enterprises.
